Italy With My Son 2012: Rome is Pazzo
We awoke early and actually left the apartment by 6AM to get the 6:55 ferry out of Rio Marina. We were there for the sunrise. There were only a few cars and people on the ferry. A chocolate croissant was [...]
Italy With My Son 2012 – Farewell to Il Chiasso and Elba
Sunday evening, our last evening on Elba on this trip, we enjoyed another wonderful dinner at Il Chiasso, but this time the mood was bittersweet. We had had a wonderful visit and were sad to be moving on.

Making Pasta With Dido at Il Chiasso
Dido, the chef at Il Chiasso, Luciano Casini’s thoroughly charming restaurant in Capoliveri in the island of Elba off of Italy’s Tuscan coast, was kind enough to give my son and I a few cooking lessons, a number of which [...]
Italy With My Son 2012 – Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina and the Wonderful Ristorante Grigolo
The plan was to go to the market in Porto Azzurro to pick out our dinner for the evening. We traveled in style. Luciano owns a 1952 Fiat station wagon in mint condition. He drove us in it to the [...]
Sunday Photo – A Man and His Automobile
Luciano Casini is one of a kind. He is charming, he is a bon vivant and he is a man of many pursuits. He could have been the person who inspired the famous Dos Equis commercial series on “the most interesting [...]
Italy With My Son 2012 – Spaghetti With Sea Urchin
Fresh sea urchin is one of life’s great treats. I love its creamy coolness and coffee-like flavor. At Il Chiasso, the chef, Dido made delicious spaghetti with sea urchin. Following are photos of what he did.
The local sea urchin and [...]
Italy With My Son 2012 – Baked Rockfish
As a Mediterranean island one would expect the quality of fish to be splendid and it is. One of the dishes I got to enjoy my first night there at Il Chiasso restaurant in Capoliveri was baked rockfish. Rockfish is [...]

Sardines have a bad rap in the United States. Perhaps, that is because we rarely get to see or eat top quality supremely fresh sardines. They are one of life’s simple pleasures and a backbone of cucina povera, the inexpensive, [...]
