Single origin, craft brewed high end coffee is like fine wine. It is meant to be sipped and savored. I love it and the opportunity to enjoy that kind of coffee is why I returned to drinking coffee in the first place. It is truly a treat, but then, like with wine, sometimes real pleasure can be found in less refined packages, especially when using it as accompaniment for food. Sitting down to breakfast at the classic Poopie’s Lunch in Glens Falls, N.Y. to enjoy a sausage, egg and cheese on a hard roll along with some freshly brewed no-name coffee and a look at one of the NYC rag newspapers while sitting at a Formica-topped table or counter is one of life’s simple, but great pleasures. The blue collar coffee at Poopie’s may not be as sippable and complex as one, say from Blue Bottle, but gulping the fresh, hot brew down as it cools off just enough is satisfying and a great pleasure in its own right. At a $1.75, a cup, it is real easy to swallow.
