Sunday Photo – Providence

I had been there before, but I had never really spent any time in Providence, R.I. before last weekend. I drove down last Saturday with two of my sons, had a totally satisfying lunch at the raw bar of Hemenway’s with plenty of great local oysters, shrimp cocktail, littleneck clams, lobster and a glass of Chablis, followed by a walk around this charming old New England meets modern America city on a perfect late fall day and even scored a bottle of 20 year old Pappy van Winkle before culminating the day with a terrific dinner at a beautiful new restaurant – The Dorrance. It didn’t end there. The next day, we had a superb brunch at Nick’s on Broadway and did a little shopping in Little Italy before heading home. The only blemish – a speeding ticket for my son on the Mass Turnpike. The bottom line is that Providence is an unexpectedly (for me) happening little city.

I haven’t been in a while. It’s been happening for quite a few years. Have to go soon.

I can’t say that I was surprised, especially given the proximity to the coast and the availability of topnotch fresh seafood. One commercial fishery really seems to be doing things right – Wild Rhody. From what I have heard about them, they are a true role model for a sustainable seafood business. I hope to do a feature on them this spring or summer if I get the chance.

On your next visit to Providence, try a great culinary tour –
We went a month ago and had a great time (and learned a lot, even though we thought we knew all about Italian cooking).
